American Plans 1,500 Maintenance Layoffs

American Airlines is planning to cut 1,500 positions in its maintenance division, including around 1,300 aircraft mechanics and 200 management/support staff. The carrier will reduce its workforce as it begins retiring its Airbus A330 fleet later this year. American, which has maintenance centers in Kansas City, Tulsa, Okla., and Fort Worth, Texas and many smaller bases around the U.S., has not released details on the number of layoffs by location. Workers at the hubs also perform maintenance on aircraft from other airlines
