'Merci McCain' Web Video Attacks John McCain for Shipping U.S. Jobs to France

Group Marks McCain’s Visit to France by Attacking His Sustained Efforts to Grant Defense Contract to French Company Airbus

WASHINGTON, March 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To mark Sen. John McCain’s, R-Ariz., meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris, Campaign for America’s Future today released a web video attacking McCain for fiercely advocating that the Department of Defense award a $40 billion contract for fuel tankers to the French company Airbus over American bidder Boeing.

The good-humored video, available at www.ourfuture.org/merci-mccain, features an ebullient Frenchman praising John McCain for exporting American jobs to France. He thanks McCain for “tens of thousands of jobs for the French” and “thousands fewer for Americans, ha ha ha!” The video, narrated in French with English subtitles, concludes, “Long live John McCain! And long live France!”

Since the Department of Defense first sought to award Boeing the tanker contract in 2001, McCain has worked tirelessly to derail it. Several McCain allies have lobbied for Airbus’s parent company, European Aeronautic Defense and Space. The firm of McCain campaign operative John Green was hired by EADS to lobby on the fuel tanker procurement deal.

In addition to his close ties to the French company, McCain has long fought for awarding defense contracts to foreign firms. In 1996, McCain voted against legislation encouraging defense contracts to be executed in the United States. In 2004, McCain wrote the law that allows defense contracts to be awarded to foreign companies.
