Russia’s team emerged victorious from the World Helicopter Championship competition, with Germany finishing second and the United Kingdom team third. The victory was Russia’s ninth in 13 world championships.
Accredited by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the competition was held Aug. 13-18 at Eisenach-Kindel in Thüringen, Germany. The federation is the world’s air sports league. Founded in 1905, it is a non-governmental, non-profit international organization that aims to further aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide. It has about some 100 member countries, and is the official keeper of aeronautical records.
Russian pilots Viktor Korotaev and Nikolay Burov finished first in the championship’s overall competition, followed by Aleksey Mayorov and Sergey Shvarts of Russia in second place and Germany’s Holger Hoven and Michael Schauff, who finished third.
Lyudmila Kosenkova and Elena Prokofyeva of Russia finished first in the women’s category, followed by second-place finishers Caroline Gough-Cooper and Imogen Asker of Great Britain and third-place finishers Galina Shpigovskaya and Liubov Gubar of Russia.
Germany swept the junior category, with Klaus Wiehe and Frank Rudolf taking first place, Bettina Schleidt and Gisela Freund finishing second and Sabine Nendza and Uta Zielezniak coming in third.
