Rotorcraft Report: South African Firm Plans Puma Modernization

SERVICES

Thunder City plans to launch a new modernization program for the Eurocopter SA330 Puma at the Africa Aerospace and Defence 2008 show, scheduled for Sept. 17-21 at Ysterplaat Air Force Base in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Cape Town-based company has developed the program to extend the life of the medium-lift helicopter. It involves what Thunder City said is a rigorous P4 inspection process and upgrades to the avionics through the installation of a "glass cockpit." The enhanced avionics would improve situational awareness for the pilot, the company said, increasing the safety of flight.

Thunder City flies and maintains the world’s last four flying English Electric Lightnings and three BAE Buccaneers, as well as seven Hawker Hunters and a Strikemaster. It claims the largest civilian-owned collection of ex-military jets in the world. It has added a fully rebuilt Puma to its heritage collection.
