Operators Guide to EFBs:
Choosing and Applying Electronic Flight Bags

A Webinar Presented By Avionics Magazine

Thursday, May 7, 2009
11:00 a.m. (EST)

$297 per site location.

The all-digital, “paperless” cockpit has become a reality with the adoption of Class 3 Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) in new production aircraft and the retrofit of portable Class 2 devices in a growing number of legacy aircraft. From their early utility of displaying reference documents such as aircraft operating manuals and navigational charts, the range of applications EFBs can host is proliferating. In the future, they could contribute immeasurably to safety and pilot “situational awareness” as airborne traffic and ground surveillance displays.

In 2007, FAA approved the use of airport moving maps with “own-ship” position on the less expensive Class 2 EFBs, paving the way for further adoption by airlines. And the devices figure prominently in planning for the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). In an evaluation of their safety potential, FAA is providing $600,000 each to SkyWest, Piedmont, US Airways and Southwest to invest in EFBs with surface moving maps. The latest update to FAA’s forward-looking NextGen Implementation Plan states that EFBs “will be used in nearly all air carrier and taxi operations to provide the flight crew with charts, manuals and weather data. Portable EFBs will enhance safety by allowing pilots to see their own aircraft’s position on surface moving map displays.”

But with new capabilities come challenges. What are the engineering considerations and costs of an EFB retrofit? What is allowed for mounting, stowing and connecting to aircraft systems? What does FAA require for Class 1 and 2 EFBs with lithium batteries?

For the answers to these and other questions, and for insight into the latest developments in EFBs, we’ve assembled representatives of leading-edge companies for this live, online discussion, “Operators Guide To EFBs: Choosing And Applying Electronic Flight Bags.” This Avionics Magazine Webinar, and a special supplement to follow in the June issue of the magazine, will provide invaluable information to operators considering, planning or awaiting the arrival of EFBs. And the webinar is interactive: registrants can pose questions to the speakers for discussion in real time.

Among discussion points:

  • What is the market for EFBs among airlines and business jet operators?
  • What are the different classes of EFBs and what are these flight computers capable of?
  • Who are the major software applications providers?
  • What are the benefits and drawbacks of Class 2 versus Class 3 EFBs?
  • What design and installation considerations must an operator take into account when installing EFBs?
  • What are the certification requirements for the different classes of EFBs?
  • What new applications are envisioned that will make EFBs even more useful to pilots?
  • What is the market for EFBs in military aircraft?

...and lots more!

Watch for the "Operators Guide To EFBs" print supplement to the June Avionics Magazine!

Or if you prefer, a phone for the audio and an Internet connection to let you watch the slides and other information on the Web will suffice. No other downloads or special hardware - a dial-up connection will work fine.

  • One (1) set of materials (you may make copies for all of the persons you invited to listen to the program);
  • One (1) toll-free connection to the seminar (if you select the audio connection), and
  • One (1) Internet connection to the seminar.

Use speakers on your computer or speakerphone on your telephone and invite your entire staff to attend for FREE!

What equipment do I need?

For the audio connection:

  • A computer with RealPlayer or Windows Media Player installed. When you log into the Virtual Seminar, your computer will be taken through a brief configuration check and will let you know if you're missing any software.
  • If you do not have RealPlayer or Windows, a touch-tone telephone will work also. It works best to use a speakerphone so that others can listen too.

For the Internet connection:

  • PC: 166Mhz Pentium-based PC or better
  • Operating system: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP
  • Browser: For optimal viewing experience, we recommend using Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. However, any version of IE 4.0 or higher will work. For Netscape, only versions 4.x are supported at this time.
  • Internet connection: 28.8 or faster connection
  • Display set at 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600
