NextGen Task Force: Applying The Recommendations
A webinar sponsored by Aviation Today

Wednesday, November 4, 2009
Noon – 1:00 p.m. (ET)

$297 per site location.

After seven months of intensive meetings involving some 300 aviation industry stakeholders, the RTCA NextGen Mid-Term Implementation Task Force in September issued its final report to FAA with recommendations for achieving Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) operating efficiencies by 2018.

The government/industry task force has produced a list of suggested operational capabilities in five identified "domains" of surface operations, runway access, metroplex operations, cruise and National Airspace System access. It has identified two capability areas that are cross-cutting of all domains: integrated air-traffic management (I-ATM) and data communications. Finally, it has asked FAA to consider "over-arching" recommendations deemed critical to successful implementation of NextGen capabilities, including financial incentives for equipage such as low-interest loans, subsidies and other mechanisms.

In making the recommendations, the Task Force emphasized the use of current equipage to provide early operational benefits, contending that higher-cost, more sophisticated capabilities would evolve as those benefits are realized. The recommendations have been described as an "airport and metroplex-centric approach" to NextGen, emphasizing major airports and metropolitan areas with the most congested airspace.

What, specifically, has the Task Force recommended, and how will FAA treat the recommendations? How will the airline, business aviation and general aviation segments benefit from the recommendations? How can avionics and equipment manufacturers plan for future requirements?

For the answers to these and other questions, we've assembled representatives of the Task Force leadership, industry stakeholders and FAA for this live, online discussion, "NextGen Task Force: Applying The Recommendations." This Avionics Magazine Webinar will provide aircraft operators and equipment manufacturers with invaluable insight on the substance of the recommendations and the prospects for implementation. And the webinar is interactive: registrants can pose questions to the speakers for discussion in real time.

Among the discussion points:

  • Does the Task Force emphasis on leveraging currently available equipment detract from the capabilities envisioned for NextGen in 2025?

  • What specific capabilities are endorsed?

  • What will be the process for incorporating the Task Force recommendations in FAA's NextGen Implementation Plan?

  • How might the recommendations affect current programs and priorities, such as the deployment of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B)?

  • The recommendations have been described as an “operators consensus” dominated by major airlines. What can the general aviation community hope to gain?

  • What new procedures and training would be required for pilots and air-traffic controllers if the recommendations were implemented?

  • The Task Force has suggested a number of different mechanisms to "incentivize equipage," including the establishment of a "NextGen Equipage Bank." Where would the money come from for such a bank?

  • Will the work of the Task Force be continued in some way?

What equipment do I need?

For the audio connection:

  • A computer with RealPlayer or Windows Media Player installed. When you log into the Virtual Seminar, your computer will be taken through a brief configuration check and will let you know if you're missing any software.

  • If you do not have RealPlayer or Windows, a touch-tone telephone will work also. It works best to use a speakerphone so that others can listen too.

For the Internet connection:

  • PC: 166Mhz Pentium-based PC or better

  • Operating system: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP
