Emirates Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding to purchase Honeywell’s SmartLanding for the majority of its fleet, making it the launch customer for the product. SmartLanding is expected to be incorporated into Emirates Boeing 777-200/300 and Airbus A330 and A340 in 2009. Honeywell said the system reduces the risk of runway excursions by alerting pilots if the aircraft is approaching the runway too high, too fast or is not configured properly for landing. It is a software enhancement to Honeywell’s Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS), installed on more than 30,000 airline and business aviation aircraft.
