Northrop Grumman issued a $33 million contract to Telephonics Corp. to develop a multimode maritime radar system for the U.S.Navy’s fleet of MQ-8B Fire Scout vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Telephonics will develop a total of nine radar systems, designed to provide the MQ-8B Fire Scout with wide-area search and long-range imaging capability.

“This radar selection is a significant milestone for the Fire Scout program and represents a significant expansion in capability for our Navy customer,” said George Vardoulakis, vice president of tactical unmanned systems for Northrop Grumman.

Vardoulakis said the radar will “significantly change how threats are addressed” by the Navy.

The two companies did not say when the integration of the new radar systems will be complete. More
