FAA has completed the first phase of testing new air traffic control (ATC) radios that will be the first radios deployed in the National Airspace System (NAS) with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability.
The agency evaluated the hardware and software of the CM 300/350 (V2) UHF and VHF, developed by General Dynamics, during the first phase of testing. General Dynamics’ UHF radios are designed to link controllers with military aircraft pilots, while the VHF radios will provide communication for commercial and general aviation pilots.
"General Dynamics moved from contract award for a brand new radio to delivering radios for acceptance testing in just over a year," said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems.
The second phase of testing will place 90 CM 300/350 (V2) radios in air traffic facilities located in New Jersey, Florida and Oklahoma to evaluate the performance of the radios within live operational environments.
