The Middle Eastern region’s first aircraft turbulence tracing detection system has been deployed by Lockheed Martin in collaboration with airport systems integrator Bayanat Airports Engineering (BAES) at Dubai International Airport.

Windtracer lidar (light detection and ranging), a system designed to collect data on turbulence arising from approaching and departing aircraft, was installed as part of the Dubai airport’s plan to begin allowing dual aircraft arrivals on both of its runways. The new arrivals are part of the airport’s response to the increase in air traffic from Emirates and other airlines in the region.
“The initial implementation of Lockheed Martin’s lidar system will help Dubai International Airport meet its future demands in passenger capacity while maintaining the highest safety standards,” said Alan Bourjeily, general manager at BAES.
According to Lockheed, Dubai International Airport ranks as the world’s second busiest airports in terms of international passengers. Passenger traffic surpassed 57 million in 2012, a 13 percent increase from the previous year.
