[Avionics Today April 8, 2014] Sandel Avionics revealed its upgraded Attitude Heading and Reference System (AHRS), SG102/D, swapping out the analog interfaces of the previous generation SG102 (MOD2) for an all-digital format.

The avionics retrofit specialist Sandel is releasing the SG102/D for fixed wing piston and turbine aircraft, as well as a high-vibration version for rotorcraft. Attitude Heading and Reference Systems are considered to be Electronic Flight Instruments Systems (EFIS) by the FAA that use microelectronic sensors to measure in-flight aircraft attitude and heading along with a computer that accepts sensor inputs and performs calculations to produce outputs that give pilots an accurate reading of the pitch, roll and yaw movements of the aircraft.
Previous generation navigation systems relied upon conventional gyroscopic instruments to measure the aircraft’s attitude.
Jerry Henry, director of technical sales at Sandel, says the SG102 is designed to replace the KG102 remote directional gyro, with outputs of heading sources from ARINC 429 digital, ARINC 407 synchro and Stepper motor. It is also capable of reusing wiring within the aircraft, which eliminates the need to modify the cockpit interior.
Sandel’s new unit is scheduled to become available in May.
