[Avionics Today 10-22-2014] Eurocontrol has announced new wake turbulence re-categorization that aims to boost airport efficiency and capacity. The specification relating to wake turbulence categorization and separation minima, called RECAT-EU, is now ready for deployment. The redefined standard aircraft wake turbulence separation minima for final approach and departure will contribute to increased runway throughput and efficiency, whilst maintaining an acceptable level of safety.

RECAT-EU is an alternative to the ICAO PANS-ATM wake turbulence categories and minima — aimed particularly at airports operating at or close to their maximum capacity, especially those with significant “heavy” category traffic. But Eurocontrol notes that the program can bring benefits to any airport, particularly during high periods of demand.

This re-categorization comes as a result of knowledge gained in recent years of wake vortex behavior in the operational environment, which has increased thanks to the availability of extensive measured data and an improved understanding of physical processes.
